I stirred the pot of mac and cheese slowly. The pasta was shaped like some of the characters from one of the shows Sunny liked to watch, but today, I was almost too distracted to even realize what I was doing.
The ring on my finger glistened in the sunlight each time I brought my hand around the pot, catching my eye each time. I couldn’t believe I was a married woman now. Monday morning, just like any other morning, had come with the blaring of my alarm.
It had started with me making pancakes for breakfast, and Wes coming down the stairs with his shirt half buttoned as always. So much of the morning went as it always had. He didn’t kiss me goodbye before work, he didn’t tell me he loved me before he left.
Needless to say, the married life that I’d signed up for was much different than the married life I always assumed that I’d have. Sure, I knew when I agreed to marry him we weren’t going to have any sort of honeymoon phase. But, I also didn’t think I would feel so – ordinary – either.
Well, mostly ordinary, anyway. It was harder than ever to keep my hands off him. Every time we were in close proximity to each other I wanted to throw my arms around him. I wanted to make out like naughty, horny teenagers. I wanted to have sex – oh, how I wanted to have sex.
But, he had told me before we even exchanged our vows what we were doing, and I agreed with him. I wasn’t going to ask for sex, though he never told me I couldn’t. All he said was that he didn’t expect anything to change. And clearly, they hadn’t.
We were just as business like as ever, and I knew that had to be fine with me, but at the same time, I wasn’t entirely sure that it was.
Wes was at work, and I was at home with Sunny. Of course I was. Where else would I be? That was my part of this equation. I would do school when she was down for her nap, and if there was any more that had to be done afterward, I’d tend to that after dinner when Wes was home to take care of Sunny.
This isn’t bad. This is just what you wanted in life, isn’t it? You’ve got a man who you know isn’t out there cheating on you, which puts you way above the last one. And he cares about you. Love? Probably not, but he cares, and that also can be considered better than the last one.
“Cheyenne? I’m hungry,” Sunny said as she walked into the kitchen.
“Lunch is ready!” I said cheerfully. We had talked about what Sunny would call me after the wedding, and I made it clear I wanted her to be the one to make that decision. I wasn’t her mother, and even when the papers were signed and filed and I was her step-parent, I still wasn’t her actual mother.
